The Afraid of Sunlight tour was a short affair compared to previous tours. The tour started in the USA, after a handful of launch and promo shows, with quite a different setlist than that presented here.
It included a large amount of the Brave album (which was never toured in the US) plus the new album and a few older songs.
After two nights, the band radically changed the setlist to the one you hear on this release, making it one of the most up-tempo openings to a Marillion show. This is the second night of the UK and European tour, The Forum is a venue that the band has played many times. As h often says, London shows can go one of two ways, either the crowd is subdued and full of the media or on nights such as this, they have a very enthusiastic audience.
The set remained much the same throughout this tour, with the odd change. This show show gave the fans a good mix of Afraid Of Sunlight, Brave and older songs including the return of White Russian (for the first time with h) and the addition of the Blue Angel section to Lavender (including a stunning Steve Rothery solo).
There is a shortage of Afraid Of Sunlight shows in the band’s archives, but this one stands out. It is also a very good sounding recording - at points Steve Rothery and h are quite high in the mix. There is the odd bit of feedback, instruments being plugged in and bum notes so bear this in mind when listening. All talking is included, but the tape ran out before the end of Garden Party, so we have added the rest of the song from the second London date a few days later - your ears don’t deceive you, the venue has changed by the end!
